Singapore Youth & Media Camp 2009

The inaugural Singapore Youth & Media Camp (SYMCamp) was held in Ngee Ann Polytechnic from 15 June to 17 June. More than 100 secondary school students attended this camp, which was spearheaded by MEDUSA (Media Education Solutions), a student-run organisation. SYMCamp’s aim was to promote media literacy by incorporating media knowledge and media skills.

Mr. Herald Bangras, a lecturer from the School of Film & Media Studies, kick-started the camp with his talk on “Violence in the Media”. The seminar gave students a better insight to the media they are consuming so that they are able to make more informed choices after knowing the significant impact the media has on its consumers and the society.

Over the three days, campers also attended a seminar on “Advertising Messages” by Mr. Clement Tay, who engaged the students with creative advertisements and interactive activities. The interesting seminar imparted skills of identifying subtle messages in advertisements to the campers. Campers were also split into groups and took turns to participate in the filming and radio production workshop conducted by in-house lecturers who have first-hand experience from the industry.

Filming Workshop

In the filming workshop, campers were taught to operate professional video cameras and framing. They were also given the chance to shoot their own short film.

Radio Workshop

Campers also got to play the role of a radio deejay in the radio production workshop. They wrote their own script and presented in a radio studio with equipment used in the industry. On the last day, guest speaker, Mr. Harry Ong, impressed campers, with his talk on “Sports and the Media”. It explored the value of sports media and also served as a prelude to the Singapore Youth and Media Conference, which will focus on sports and the media.

Ms. Sonia Chen rounded off the last day of the camp by imparting precious presentation skills to the campers. She busted presentation myths and equipped campers with the skills to be better and more confident speakers though interactive activities and brain storming sessions.

Singapore Youth & Media Conference 2006

Held on 26 May in Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Convention Centre, the Singapore Youth & Media Conference was centred on the theme of “Popular Culture”. Speakers for the conference came from various countries that included the United States, Australia, Taiwan, India, Hong Kong and even Vietnam.

The Guest-of-Honour for the SYMC 2006 was Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and he delivered his keynote address on key issues involving youths and the media. Other speakers included Christopher James, General Manager of MTV (SEA), Ms Stella Thg, editor of LIME magazine and Mr Ken Lim (Singapore Idol judge).

After the opening forum, there were workshops held on several subjects of interest, including Gaming, Creative Writing, Creative Comics, Drama, Media Violence, Media Stereotypes and Talk on Air – A Radio Experience.

At the end of the conference, a closing forum was held with speakerss addressing the topic of “Dollars and Dreams: Careers in popular Culture in Singapore”.

Horror Cinema - Nanyang Girls’ High School

Over 400 students from Nayang Girls’ High School attended a course on horror in cinema as part of their curriculum’s Special Interest Lecture Programme. The speaker engaged for the course was Mr Danny Boey, a lecturer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Film & Media Studies.

The course aims to help students better understand the elements of a horror movie. On top of that, it also allows students to examine the difference between horror films in the East and the West.

Besides showing the students excerpts of horror movies, Mr Boey spoke on the common archetypes that feature in horror films, how horror films have evolved over the years in various nations across Asia and the morbid attraction that horror holds for its viewers.

Death & Dying – The Lien Foundation

The Lien Foundation, a non-profit organisation founded in 1980 that engages in philanthropy, commissioned a research project that started in September 2008. It’s aim is to gain deeper insights on death amongst Singaporeans and what people perceive as a “good death”.

This research project is meant to run alongside a public campaign launched by the Lien Foundation in order to measure the effectiveness of the campaign and to gauge whether the mindsets of Singaporeans have changed as a result of the campaign message. Prior to the start of the campaign, a focus group was conducted as a precursor to a street poll.
